The Word That is Still Speaking

Article 1 in The Deep Roots of the Path series. The Word is not just a historical event — it is the creative energy of the Divine moving through your own consciousness today.

THE ESSENCE

Creation is not an event that happened once in the past; it is an ongoing expression of the Divine happening right now.

The “Word” that was in the beginning is the same creative energy moving through your own consciousness today.

To question traditional boundaries is not to abandon faith, but to follow the river back to its deepest source.

We are not separate from the Creator; we are the very means by which the Eternal continues to express itself.

The Unfinished Sentence — A Poem

You were taught that the speaking stopped
long before you arrived,
that the holy words were all written
and the book was closed.

But listen to the way the morning breaks.
Listen to the quiet hum of your own breath.
The Word did not simply become flesh once
and then leave us to our own devices.

The speaking is still happening.
The sentence is not finished.
You are not just the reader of the text —
you are the ink still wet on the page.

When the boundaries of religious teachings feel too small, those raised in traditional religious environments often face a moment of quiet crisis. We start asking questions. We wonder if the Divine is larger than the doctrines we inherited. And almost immediately, a fear arises: if I step outside these lines, am I walking away from God?

This fear is natural, but it is based on a misunderstanding of what the tradition actually holds. When you explore the ideas of New Thought and contemplative spirituality, you are not abandoning the ancient texts. You are learning to read them at their original depth.

The Word was never meant to be confined to the past.

Consider the opening of the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” For centuries, we have been taught to read this only as a historical reference to Jesus. But the great philosophers and mystics throughout time have understood “The Word” (or the Logos) as something much broader. It is the creative principle of the Universe itself; the original thought of the Self-Existing Presence acting upon itself to bring all of physical creation into being.

This means that Creation was not a onetime event that happened thousands of years ago. It is an ongoing process. The Word is still speaking. And because you are an expression of that same Divine source, that creative energy is moving through your own consciousness right now.

“When you explore these ideas, you are not abandoning the ancient texts. You are learning to read them at their original depth.”

The Eternal is forever begetting.

In the 14th century, the great Catholic theologian and mystic Meister Eckhart expressed a profound truth that got him condemned by the Pope. He said, “God never begot but one Son, but the Eternal is forever begetting the only begotten.” Eckhart understood that “The Son” is not just a historical figure, but the continuous, living expression of the Divine in the world. We are part of that ongoing creation.

This is the foundational idea of New Thought. It is not a new invention. It is the recovery of a mystical truth that has been present in our sacred texts from the very beginning. When we realize the Word is still active, we stop waiting for salvation from the outside and recognize the Divine presence already operating within us.

Contemplative Practice: Listening for the Word

Find a quiet place to sit and allow your body to settle. Take a few deep, intentional breaths, releasing any tension you are holding in your shoulders or jaw.

Instead of using this time to pray to a distant God, use it to listen to the presence of the Divine right here. Close your eyes and tune into the subtle energy of your own awareness. Notice the simple fact that you exist. That existence is the ongoing expression of the Creator.

Silently repeat this thought to yourself: The Word is still speaking, and it is speaking through me.

When your mind wanders to the past or the future, gently bring it back to the present moment. Feel the creative energy of life moving through your breath and your heartbeat. Sit in this awareness for five to ten minutes, resting in the knowledge that you are a living expression of the Eternal.

In the New Thought understanding, the “Word” represents the creative thought and energy of the Divine. When the Word becomes flesh, it means that spiritual truth and divine intention take physical form. While traditional Christianity views this exclusively as the historical incarnation of Jesus, contemplative philosophy sees it as an ongoing reality: the Divine is constantly taking form in and through all of creation, including you.
Meister Eckhart (1260–1329) was a German Catholic theologian, philosopher, and mystic. He taught that the human soul can achieve a direct, experiential union with God, and that the Divine is constantly expressing itself in the present moment. Because his teachings emphasized the immediate presence of God within the individual rather than through the hierarchy of the church, some of his statements were posthumously condemned by the Pope. Today, he is widely revered across many spiritual traditions.
Not at all. In New Thought and contemplative traditions, Jesus is revered as the great way shower — the ultimate example of a human being who fully realized and demonstrated his oneness with the Divine. Rather than seeing him as the great exception to humanity, he is seen as the great example for humanity, inviting us to realize the same Christ consciousness within ourselves.
The core idea of New Thought is that the Universe is fundamentally spiritual, and that there is one Infinite Intelligence (God, Spirit, or the Divine) that is the source of all things. Because we are expressions of this Divine source, our own thoughts and consciousness have creative power. By aligning our minds with spiritual truth, we can experience healing, peace, and a deeper connection to life.
